The UCO-IFAPA Joint Olive Breeding Program (UCO-IFAPA JOBP)

 
The UCO-IFAPA Joint Olive breeding Program was set up in 1991. Its pursued goals were obtain suitable cultivars for the new olive intensive and mechanized growing systems. Up to date we have evaluated more than 10,000 genotypes generated from 101 different crosses. Currently there are 401 preselections and 31 advanced selections under evaluation in intermediate field trials. Among the later, 16 advanced selections are being established in a network of pre-commercial field trials.












The Program includes:

COMMON OBJECTIVES FOR ALL CROSSES:

• Earliness of bearing

• High yield

• High oil content

OBJECTIVE FOR OPEN VASE TRAINED TREES:

• APTITUDE TO MECHANICAL HARVESTING

OBJETIVE FOR HIGH DENSITY NARROW HEDGEROW ORCHARDS:

• small vigour and COMPACT HABIT OF GROWTH

Other objectives:

• RESISTANCE TO PEACOCK SPOT

• RESISTANCE TO VERTICILLIUM WILT

• DIVERSITY OF OLIVE OIL COMPOSITION

• DIVERSITY OF SENSORIAL ATTRIBUTES
