Un Proyecto de Gestión Integral de Cuencas Mediterráneas

The Water Framework Directive aims at a deeper knowledge of the different processes which determine the quantity and quality of the water fluxes in the hydrological system and their effects on the environment. The Andalusian Council, through the Andalusian Water Agency and the Andalusian Water Institute, being aware of the difiiculties that arise regarding the management of water resources in the region, recognizes the need of a complete evaluation of such resources. Thus, in order to provide technical tools for the decision-making process by water managers, the agreement “Pilot study for the integrated management of the Guadalfeo river basin” http://www.cuencaguadalfeo.com/,is signed on 14 November 2002 .

The main goal of the Guadalfeo Project has been to provide a model of the basin in order to answer questions related to the management of water resources and to establish management strategies which “… ensure sustainable water use based on long-term protection of available water resources” (WFD 2000/CE European Parliament and Council, Article 1).

To do this, an integrated model (WIM-MED; Water Integrated Management for MEDiterranean Areas) has been developed in order to give answers to classical management questions as how much-where-when?, adding how and with what uncertainty.

The study is carried out between the Centre for Environment Studies (Granada) and the University of Córdoba, with the Andalusian Water Agency as the leader. Finally, the implementation of the study is responsibility of the Group of Environmental Flow Dynamics, under the direction of Miguel Ángel Losada Rodríguez, Professor of Hydraulic Engineering at the University of Granada, and the Fluvial Dynamics and Hydrology Research Group, coordinated by Maria José Polo Gomez, Assistant Professor of Hydraulic Engineering at the University of Córdoba.
