The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, UCO, has evolved throughout its history begining in the period of constituting the University of Cordoba and the start up of the LRU, at the mid-70's, with a structure of centers with academic chairs that were turned into Departments. In 1986, after applying the LRU, two Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology were formed, that were fused into the current one at the end of 1991.

In 2001, three of the four units moved to a common building the new campus of UCO Rabanales, Severo Ochoa building. They are those for the centers of ETSIAM, Veterinary and Sciences. The fourth unit remains in the Faculty of Medicine.

The objectives of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology are the coordination for teaching of the subject area in Schools teaching in accordance with the teaching program of the UCO and with the support to the educational activities and initiatives for teaching and research of adscribed faculty personel.

Today, the Department offers instruction in the following areas: Agronomy, Biology, Biochemistry, Environmental Science, Science and Food Technology, Enology, Medicine, Forestry, Chemistry and Veterinary.

Also, from the year 2001-2006 it coordinated the doctoral program "Experimentation in Biosciences" participating on it the related areas of the Department of Cell Biology, Physiology and Immunology. In 2006, this program became the current Master "Molecular, Cellular and Genetic Biotechnology ", with mention to the excellence of the MEC, which is also coordinated by our Department.

Finally, it should be noted that the faculty of the Department is fully involved in research work as reflected in the existence of 10 research groups under the frame of the Andalusian Research Plan (IAP), that perform their work with an average rating very positive and high participation in research projects at regional, national and international levels.
