Karen Knorr (Frankfurt, 1954) obtained the 5th PILAR CITOLER INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY PHTOGRAPHY AWARD in 2010. To mark the occasion, the Sala PuertaNueva in Cordoba will open the first individual restrospective exhibition of this artist in Spain on 23rd February 2012, showing a selection of forty works of art, dated between 1976 and 2011, in which a wide representation of the diverse series of this artist are shown: Punk, 1976-1977(in collaboration with Olivier Richon); Gentlemen, 1981-1983; Connoisseurs, 1986-1990; Academies, 1994-2005; Fables, 2003-2008 and India Song, 2008-2011. For this exhibition, curated by Alfonso de la Torre with Karen Knorr the fifth volume of the collection EL OJO QUE VES will be launched. Quentin Bajac and Kathy Kubicki have also participated in this book. It has been edited by Ediciones del Umbral and will be distributed by La Fábrica.

Karen Knorr studied in London and Paris, exhibiting her photographic work globally since the 1980’s. She has lectured and taught in many institutions internationally including Tate Britain, Tate Modern, The University of Westminster, Goldsmiths, Harvard and The Art Institute of Chicago. Knorr obtained a BA Hons in PHotography and Filmic Arts in 1980 from the University of Westminster where she studied in the late seventies. She is currently Professor of Photography at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, Surrey (http://www.karenknorr.com).
With respect to the authors of the fifth volume of ‘El Ojo que Ves’ that will be launched together with this exhibition, it features essays by Quentin Bajac, Head Curator of Photography at the Pompidou Centre, who has written that, ‘in her work, the individual disappears little by little in benefit of the space and the things that surround it.’
Kathy Kubicki, an academic and writer, Senior Lecturer at the University for the Creative Arts has observed that ‘ritual, ostentation and death are key concepts in the fascinating work of Knorr. It is poetic work, profoundly mysterious, lively and elegant, involving original concepts and ideas and innovative production methods’.
Alfonso de la Torre the commisioner of the exhibition also observes that, ‘Knorr manages to bore through appearances gently yet without mercy and create, from a common reality, a new space in which an unknown fullness opens out, a kind of transfiguring epiphany of the common place’.
The exhibition dedicated to Karen Knorr coincides with that exhibiting the works from the VI Award held in 2011 and given to Jorge Yeregui. The following artists’ works will also be shown: Colectivo MR (Ricardo Ramón Jarne-Marina García Burgos Benfield); Anna Fox; Álvaro Laiz García; Wendy McMurdo; Esteban Pastorino Díaz; Joana Pimentel; Rubio Infante and Paco Valverde Gámez.
Pilar Citoler is a renowned art collector. In 2005 she received the ARCO Prize for private collections in Spain, and in 2007 the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts. She was chairperson on the board of the Reina Sofia National Art Museum between 2005 and 2010. Last year, a selection from her photography collection was shown at the Andalusian Photography Centre (Centro Andaluz de Fotografía-CAF) in Almería, under the title ‘La ciudad magnifica’.

The ‘profilometer’ designed by researchers of the Spanish Campus of International Excellence ceiA3
The ‘profilometer’ designed by researchers of the Spanish Campus of International Excellence ceiA3

Controlling the erosion caused by water is fundamental for farmers. The passing of water from rain, irrigation or rivers over cultivated land causes deterioration of fields. The control of this erosion allows professionals in this sector to be informed about the situation of the land and avoid loss and deterioration in cultivated zones. To favour this task, a research team from the University of Cordoba’s Rural Engineering Department that coordinates the Campus of International Excellence ceiA3 has patented a new device that calculates quickly and precisely the surfaces of ground eroded by water (gullies).
It is a new profilometer that measures the surface of ephemeral gullies (trenches created by the passing of water), gullies in fields and drainage channels that farmers want to analyse in cultivated fields and hence measure the erosion and loss in the soil that can be produced by the action of water, a situation that can lead to the deterioration and loss of cultivated zones.
This new device is composed of a distance laser sensor that allows measurements to be taken in a determined area without the need to establish physical contact with the depressions formed by the water. “For better operation we have installed a laser device on a direct current motor, a motor that moves in a circular motion via a rotary system,” explains professor Rafael Pérez Alcántara, who is in charge of the project. “The system has an adjustable initial position and turning range that allows for the taking of measurements vertically and horizontally,” he continues. At present, measurements are carried out with heavier profilometers that prevent the user from transporting them.
Once measurements are taken, the data is stored through a microcontroller – an electric circuit that includes in its interior the three functional units of a computer: a central processing unit, memory and entrance and exit peripherals – that allow for the downloading and analysis of information collected through the application of software installed on the computer. The profilometer can also be incorporated into a GPS device to pinpoint exactly where the measurements have been taken and which is useful for storing and processing the obtained results.
More Precision and Less Time
“Through this device more precise measurements are obtained. Its design of a laser on a continuous motor allows for the recording of a high number of detailed sections and reduces the time taken to collect the data,” explains Pérez Alcántara. Another of its advantages is that, being a lighter device than is normally used, it is fully portable for the user. “All these characteristics dramatically reduce the cost of analysis and, as such, make it more attractive to the professionals who require this type of measurements,” concludes professor Pérez Alcántara.

Researchers at the University of Cordoba (UCO) and the University of Valencia study the metabolism of the EDP solar filter that accumulates in the body. The benefits of sun protection manufactured by the cosmetics industry and used almost daily by millions of people across the world do not exempt this type of product from the possibility of generating some type of health problem. Without doubt, sun protection is fundamental and highly beneficial in avoiding the harmful consequences of ultraviolet radiation (burning, cell ageing or the growth of skin carcinomas). However, the composition of sun protectors is invigilated by health authorities to avoid other types of harm.
Among other limitations, European and American authorities limit the maximum concentration of a very specific component, recently studied by researchers at the University of Cordoba in collaboration with the University of Valencia, to 8%. The component is a filter known as EDP, associated with hormonal disorders and for which an analysis method has been developed which allows the discovery of more details about the metabolism in vivo (until now it has only been studied at a laboratory level) of EDP. In this way, researchers have developed a simple method that, in an automated way and using mass spectrometry, allows the detection of the presence of EDP and its metabolites in urine, through which 0.5% of the total are eliminated, according to the research study published in the Journal of Chromatography A.
