Biography

Carlos has a background in agricultural economics, with an emphasis on water research. Graduated as Doctor in the University of Córdoba (Spain), Carlos joined the University of Córdoba as an assistant professor of agricultural economics in Agricultural and Forest Engineering in 2009, after three years in the Water Economics Group of the Spanish Environmental Ministry. Previously, he had worked for the University of Cordoba in several research projects.

Research Interests

Carlos’s research focuses on water economics as a whole, with an emphasis in the following main research lines:

  • Economic instruments for water governance, including water pricing, water markets, water accounting, cost-effectiveness analysis…
  • Mathematical modelling focused on irrigated agriculture. Modelling at farm level through Multi Attribute Utility Theory (MAUT), Positive Mathematical Programming (PMP) and Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) using the specific software General Algebraic Modelling System (GAMS).
  • Water use and efficiency, focused on rebound effect of investment in water saving.

Carlos’s current research projects include:

  • (TED2021-131066B-I00) e-MOHICAN: Digital platform for hydro-economic basin modelling for water policy and climate change analysis. Period: 2022-2025. Principal investigator
  • (HE-CL6-GOV-RIA-2022-101086578) GOVAQUA: Water governance, economic and financial sustainability of water systems). Period: 2023-2027. Project Coordinator: Julio Berbel (University of Córdoba).  HORIZON-CL6-GOVERNANCE. European Commission
  • (PRIMA-S1 NEXUS-2021-2141) BONEX – Boosting Nexus Framework Implementation in the Mediterranean. Period: 2022-2025. Project Coordinator: Julio Berbel (University of Córdoba)

(2019-2021), SYWAG (System of Water Accounting in the Guadalquivir River Basin, 2014-2015), CAP&TRADE (water market scenarios for meridional Europe, new solutions for scarcity and drought, 2010-2013), AGUA-ICAD (Assessment of public policies for water management in agriculture: Uncertainty, climate change and WFD, 2008-2010), WADI (Sustainability of European Irrigated Agriculture Under Water Framework Directive and Agenda 2000, 5th Framework Programme, 2003-2005)

Teaching Interests

Carlos currently manages several undergraduate subjects as Business Management, Natural Resources and Valuation; Agricultural Valuation; Business Economics; and the postgraduate subjects Natural Resources Economics; Agrofood Business Management; and Forest Business Management at the University of Córdoba.
