Integration of combined cooling, heating and power microgrids in zero-energy public buildings under high power quality and continuity of service requirements (IMPROVEMENT)

Active Projects

About the project

The project IMPROVEMENT, “Integration of combined cooling, heating and power microgrids in zero-energy public buildings under high power quality and continuity of service requirements”, included in the INTERREG SUDOE program, has the general objective of converting existing public buildings into consumer buildings of almost zero energy by integrating renewable energy micro-grids with combined generation of heat, cold and electricity, and storage systems. More specifically, IMPROVEMENT has three specific objectives:

  • Development of a system to improve energy efficiency in public buildings through a solar heating and cooling generation system, and the incorporation of active / passive techniques for buildings with almost zero energy consumption.
  • Development of a fault-resistant power control system for micro-grids under design criteria of high supply quality
  • Development of an energy management system for renewable generation micro-grids with hybrid energy storage system under criteria of minimum degradation, maximum efficiency and priority in the use of renewable energies.

In addition, IMPROVEMENT will allow the improvement of public energy efficiency policies and the use of renewable energy sources in public buildings and homes through the implementation of networks and joint experimentation.

The SUDOE IMPROVEMENT project (SOE3 / P3 / E0901) is co-financed by the Interreg SUDOE Program and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), and has a budget of 2.5 million euros (75% funded by the European Commission) and a duration of three years (until September 2022).

Expected results

IMPROVEMENT will allow to achieve the following results:

  • Improve the energy autonomy of existing public buildings through hybrid storage systems, even under extreme weather conditions.
  • Increase the energy efficiency of public buildings with the integration of nearly zero energy building techniques, and cooling and heating systems based on renewable energy with thermal storage.
  • Development of fault-resistant micro-grids through the use of inverters with active neutral control to guarantee the power quality, in the presence of sensitive loads (high-tech equipment).
  • Demonstration in real (and replicable) public buildings.
  • Develop regional strategies and implementation plans.

In addition, as a result of the project, and with the collaboration of the associated companies, a business plan will be developed for the commercialization of the developed technology.
