External internships may be recognized with up to 6 credits as part of the optional credits module or may be considered as part of the Final dissertation up to the equivalent of 6 credits.

Requirements:

- The student must be enrolled in one of the degrees offered by the Faculty of Science during the academic year in which the external internship is to be carried out.

- The student must have passed a minimum of 120 credits of the degree in which they are enrolled, which must include at least 60 credits of the “basic training” set of credits.

- The student must not have completed the 240 credits composing the degree.

- The insurance established by the UCo to this end, complementary to the school insurance, must be paid.

Internship duration shall last for a minimum of 1 month full time, and may not extend beyond September 30th.

For each credit of external internships, 25 hours of student work will be required, at least 80% of such hours shall be carried out at the partner Company/Organization; the rest may correspond to meetings with the internship counselor, preparation of the report, etc.

Contents of this subject are aimed at the acquisition by the student of the necessary knowledge about the language, content, structure and development of a project or study in Biology and its application in relation to professional profiles and competences related to this degree.

The Final dissertation module counts 15 European credits and is considered an annual subject, to be carried out during the last year of this degree. Students may register for the Final dissertation once they have passed at least 150 basic and compulsory credits.

The Final dissertation must include the composition of a written report and, if necessary, an oral presentation and defence. Presentation and evaluation shall be carried out individually. The evaluation of the Final dissertation shall performed by an evaluation committee appointed for this purpose. At least a summary of the dissertation and the conclusions should be written and presented orally in English.

The Final dissertation may only be graded once the rest of the credits required to obtain the degree have been passed.

Although, for the purposes of academic organization, the Final dissertation is included as an annual project in the 4th year, in order not to delay the graduation of students who meet the requirements, and in accordance with the procedure provided for in the regulations governing final dissertations, as approved by the Faculty Board, an ongoing presentation system is in place, although the calls for presentation must be settled. In any case, every student shall prepare their own individual presentation for evaluation.


In order to guarantee the coordination of teaching within the same course and on the different courses in the Degree, the Faculty of Sciences currently counts on its Biology Teaching Subcommittee and the Biology Degree Subcommittee appointed for this purpose. All of the above, without prejudice to the future establishment of a single coordination committee, either by courses or for the entire degree.

Likewise, and as approved with the CIDUA (Commission for Teaching Innovation on Andalusian Universities) project, the curriculum will be established taking into account in its programming the division of the student body into the categories of: Large Group (65 students), Medium Group (25 students), Tutorial Group (10 students).

The student activity defined in ECTS in the new undergraduate degrees is essentially different from the current one, based on the teaching activity that requires the presence of the teacher and the student, mostly based on theoretical and practical classes. The new model is based on the hours of work required to acquire the competencies as defined in a given subject. Therefore, the student's activity requires personal work that must be clearly defined, planned and supervised by the teacher through seminars and tutorials. In this sense, 1 ECTS credit is considered equivalent to 25 hours of student work. Therefore, according to the recommendations of the CAU, face-to-face teaching is meant to take, on average, around 40%.

Therefore, the teaching methods based on lectures given to large groups of students should be proportionally less and, on the contrary, teaching activities directed to small groups, such as seminars or group tutorials, in which student-teacher contact and active student participation in the activity are encouraged, should be increased.

Training activities will also include the use of the UCo's Computer Classrooms and Virtual Classroom and learning based on problem solving. Likewise, the development of activities aimed at the acquisition of transversal and systemic skills should be promoted.

In any case, as a guideline (still being aware that the very nature of certain subjects requires a different distribution), we understand that a scheme in accordance with the new teaching and learning model as advocated would be the following:

- Training activities shall be divided into two main categories: on-site and off-site.

- Face-to-face training activities may be classified, depending on the size of the group, as follows:

- Large Group On-Site Class: a lecture given by the teacher that may have different formats (presentations of theory, problems and/or general example, general subject guidelines). The teacher is supported by audiovisual and computer media. This includes the hours dedicated to exams.

- Seminars in Medium Groups: training activities involving the presentation of theory, demonstrations, problems or cases presented by the teacher. Classroom presentation of teaching materials that, due to its characteristics, make this format appropriate (videos, images, problems specific to each discipline).

- Practical lessons in the laboratory for Medium Groups: hands-on lessons in which applications of the theory are proposed and solved in the laboratory with the appropriate equipment. They are to support theoretical teaching or aimed at helping students acquire skills related to the know-how of a series of disciplines. The teacher may have the support of audiovisual and computer media. Also included here are the evaluation tests in the Laboratory.

- Lessons in a computer classroom for Medium Groups: this includes classes in which the student uses the computer in the computer classroom (use of software for illustration of theory, search and analysis of information, simulations, demonstrations, etc.). Computer-based assessment tests are also included.

- Seminars in Tutorial Groups: formative activities based on cases and problem-solving scenarios presented by the teacher, guidance on other activities to be carried out and presented, presentations and debate by the students of completed activities individually or in small groups.

- Tutorial Group sessions: activities for the proposal and supervision of directed work, theory clarification, problems, exercises, programs, readings or other proposed tasks, presentation, debate or commentary of individual work or work done in small groups whenever the means of a computer classroom or laboratory are not necessary.

The teaching will be established taking into account that the learning activities will be divided into two main categories: on-site and off-site.

The scheduling and delivery of the on-site activities will be carried out according to its number of students, wich will result in Large Group, Medium Group and Tutorial Group divisions. Priority will be given to learning activities aimed at teaching or working groups in which student-teacher contact and active student participation are encouraged. Likewise, the development of activities aimed at the acquisition of basic skills should be promoted.

In addition to lectures (Large Group), there will be seminars (Medium Group), hands-on laboratory sessions (Medium Group) and individual or Tutorial Group sessions.

The coordination mechanisms include periodic meetings of teachers by subject in order to analyze the results obtained in each case. A single, consensual and globalized evaluation of every student will be carried out in relation to the whole subject, regardless of the distribution among teachers of their learning activities. Likewise, inter-departmental contacts will be established in order to suggest and coordinate transversal activities, to share experiences and to propose improvement actions.
