The Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of Córdoba was created in 1971 as a college attached to the University of Seville. Two years later it was transformed into a Faculty when it was integrated into the recently created University of Córdoba. The campus, shared with the Faculty of Law until 1983, is located in the heart of the Judería, or Jewish Quarter, at the emblematic Hospital del Cardenal Salazar, one of the most interesting examples of 18th-century civil architecture in Córdoba. Originally conceived of as a school for the acolytes and children of the Cathedral Choir, it was inaugurated as a hospital in 1724 after the terrible plague that devastated Córdoba at the beginning of that century, and which revealed its dearth of infirmaries. The building features an almost rectangular design, with two dissimilar patios around which the various premises are distributed. In 1980, converted into a College, plans were drawn up for its expansion, with new spaces featuring postmodern aesthetics, to house a library, assembly hall and offices. The grounds also include the Chapel of San Bartolomé, dating from the beginning of the 15th century, one of the most outstanding examples of mudéjar Gothic art in the province of Córdoba.
