The Co-financed Partnerships and other international R&D initiatives, whose proposals, in the case of UCO, are generally funded by the International Collaboration Projects (PCI) call from the State Research Agency, have the main objective of promoting cooperation and coordination of research policy activities carried out in the Member States, associated countries, and other third countries through their own research programs. These actions are intended for the preparation, creation of network structures, and implementation of joint activities, emphasizing the implementation of calls for research and innovation projects.

These calls have the peculiarity that each country decides which one to join each year, so it will be necessary to verify if Spain participates in the relevant call for a specific year.

The co-financed partnerships are part of the European Grand Initiatives that support the implementation of the EU Framework Program, Horizon Europe, and have the peculiarity of being developed in two phases:

  1. The first European phase, where submitted proposals are evaluated.
  2. The next phase of national funding for projects that have passed the first phase.

These calls have the advantage that each partner receives funds from their respective national funding agency, facilitating consortium coordination at the management level. Additionally, the success rate in this type of calls tends to be higher than the calls in the EU Framework R&D&I Program.
